We are a small society of undergraduates and postgraduates at the University of Aberdeen, dedicated to getting together to discuss various philosophical issues (either in the form of films, discussion nights, socials, or readings). There exists no interest in putting forward any particular viewpoint; rather, we are interested in the intellectual rigour of ideas and concepts. We meet every Wednesday evening (our Reading Group meets every other Tuesday, New King's 7, beginning 06/10/09). Many of our members are not necessarily students of Philosophy - our society welcomes students from all walks of life and disciplines. We have several members who study the Sciences, Politics, and the Arts, and who enjoy discussing a wide range of issues from morality to ontological concerns - perhaps demonstrating how relevant and universal philosophical enquiry is. However, a word from the President: "should you spout bollocks, we will gun you down like Billy the Kid" |

WEDNESDAY 11th NOVEMBER – Discussion Night at the Blue Lamp What happens to morality during war-time? Are moral principles still relevant on the battlefield? How do we decide which of our principles take primacy? Can intentional – not collateral – casualties be justified (in a wider context)? Can parties truly remain neutral (and should they be allowed to?) Meet at the Spooky Grave for 7pm, or at the Blue Lamp for 7:30. TUESDAY 17th NOVEMBER – Reading Group For the penultimate meeting this term, we will be examining Friedrich Nietzsche’s “Twilight of the Idols”, up to the end of “The Four Great Errors” (with a view to complete the book for the last Reading Group in December).
